Data + Coaching = Success
We know paying attention is key, but how do we make sure we are paying attention to the right thing?
Step 1. Figure out how we naturally pay attention
TAIS outlines three different ways we can pay attention. We all have one that we’re best at using and are most likely to default to, especially when the pressure is on.
Think of what channel or streaming service you like the best – could you sit and watch your favourite show for two hours straight? How about if you had to sit and watch the Weather Network?
The "channel", or attentional style, that we prefer to use feels like watching a marathon of our favourite sitcom – easy to pay attention to, does not drain us, and is comforting. Using the attentional style that we are lowest in feels more like paying attention to the Weather Network – we CAN do it, of course, but it's not something we can give our full attention to without considerable effort to block out distractions.
By knowing which attentional style each individual is drawn to, they can more easily set up their environment to support that, claim it confidently as a strength, and anticipate how much energy they’ll need to complete a task that requires that style. Knowing one’s least preferred style allows each person to strategically prepare for activities that require the use of that style.
This is at the core of what makes TAIS the best tool for top performers. By identifying our attentional strengths, we can harness the power of paying attention to the right thing at the right time.
