The Value of Self-Assessment: What I Learned from 4 Personality Tests
In the past three months, I've taken four different self-assessments: the Big Five, Principals You, VIA Character Strengths, and TAIS.
Each provided insights but only 1 led to me making changes in my life ( *Cough* TAIS ).
The Big Five
Revealed I’m gregarious ( high extraversion), love pleasing others ( high agreeableness), and enjoy structure to solving tasks ( high contentiousness).Learned I’m capable of calming my mind about everything outside my control ( low neuroticism) while being extremely cautious to prevent the worst outcomes.
VIA Character Strengths
Their rank order of the traits from most valued to least was not helpful. Humor, leadership, and love of learning ranked in the top 5 but the lack of numbers defining metrics in these made me wonder how much I value one over the other.
Principals You
Reassured I was a gregarious leader, defining me as a Growth Seeker, Coach ( accelerate others' growth ), and Shaper ( visionary ). The measurements in each category pieced some of the puzzles together in my given archetype. Overall comprehensive assessment (THAT'S FREE) and gives insights to parts of your personality but didn’t lead me to make any changes.
TAIS
Delivered exactly what a growth seeker like me has been wanting from an assessment. It directly compared the average of business executives to my scores, showing how my quirks impact my performance. Here's what I learned:
1. I do my best in high-energy, chaotic environments.🔥
I stopped lying to myself and got to the coffee shop as opposed to staying at my home office and getting half as much done.
2. I stopped trying to be Elon Musk.🪫
I stopped chasing being the best _ X_ ( developer, speaker, gym rat). I do my best in places where I can think of new ideas, learn enough to talk with experts about them, and coordinate the moving pieces to make it happen.
3. I’m not always direct.👇
I do everything out of love and tend to not tell anyone “how it is” in the hope that my questions will lead them to their own answers. It doesn’t always work …
